As a result, details of vulnerabilities that were still being addressed became publicly visible before every fix was ready.

Linux kernel maintainer Greg Kroah-Hartman responded to the reports and questioned why they had been submitted to a public list. At the time of reporting, some issues had not yet been fixed in the mainline kernel, although patches for certain flaws were reportedly being tested or prepared in development branches.

Two High-Severity KSMBD Flaws

The most serious items include two vulnerabilities in KSMBD, the SMB server implemented in the Linux kernel. Both are rated CVSS 9.0 and could lead to remote code execution (RCE).

ZDI-CAN-33549: A flaw in the SMB Direct path involving an integer underflow. Under specific conditions, it can cause an out-of-bounds memory operation and potentially enable remote code execution. Exploitation requires conditions such as SMB Direct and an RDMA-capable network.

ZDI-CAN-33774: A race condition in KSMBD protocol handling that may lead to remote code execution. Reporting indicates that one attack path does not require prior authentication.

Other reported issues affect different kernel components, including networking code that may permit local privilege escalation, the VMware graphics driver, and the NVMe target subsystem, where a flaw may expose information. Their attack prerequisites and impacts differ; not all of these issues are remotely exploitable.

Which Systems May Be Affected?

The KSMBD risks are relevant to systems that enable or use that service, especially servers exposing SMB over a network. Other kernel issues may affect systems depending on the drivers and features in use. Running Linux does not by itself mean every machine is exposed in the same way.

Administrators should review their actual configurations and follow security notices from the Linux kernel project and their Linux distribution vendor. Distribution maintainers may backport fixes into their packages without matching the upstream version number exactly.

Recommended Actions for Administrators

Check whether KSMBD or related SMB services are enabled on any servers.

Restrict SMB access to trusted networks and necessary clients; avoid exposing the service to untrusted networks.

Monitor Linux distribution security advisories and install kernel updates containing the relevant fixes as soon as they are available.

Track remediation for each vulnerability separately, as fixes may reach upstream kernel branches and distribution packages at different times.

Do not rely solely on the upstream version number to determine whether a system is patched; consult the advisory for the distribution actually deployed.

     The accidental publication of Linux kernel vulnerability reports on a public mailing list increases the urgency for administrators to review their exposure, particularly on systems using KSMBD.

Two reported KSMBD flaws are rated CVSS 9.0 and may allow remote code execution.

Actual risk depends on enabled components and the fixes supplied by each vendor, so administrators should follow official advisories and update according to their distribution’s guidance.

References

Cybersecurity News: Linux Kernel Flaws Accidentally Disclosed

Phoronix: Several Linux Kernel Vulnerabilities Accidentally Posted To Public Kernel Mailing List

  #dm-article-en {
    --h-bg: #060b18;
    --h-panel: #0b1428;
    --h-panel-2: #0e1a34;
    --h-blue: #3d7fff;
    --h-blue-soft: #8fb4ff;
    --h-cyan: #17e9c0;
    --h-text: #eaf0fb;
    --h-muted: #8fa3c8;
    --h-line: rgba(61,127,255,0.22);

    font-family: 'Inter', -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', sans-serif;
    background: var(--h-bg);
    color: var(--h-text);
    line-height: 1.7;
  }
  #dm-article-en *, #dm-article-en *::before, #dm-article-en *::after { box-sizing: border-box;
